Welcome to Kenya!
You arrive at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya's capital city. This is East Africa's international flight hub, where a Jamii tours & Travel ltd representative will meet you and transfer you to Nairobi Tented Camp, about 30 minutes from the airport.
This unique stopover is tucked away in a beautiful riverine forest within in the Nairobi National Park - a protected reserve with resident big game on the rural edge of the city. It may be a domesticated wilderness but it is also a charming introduction to your Kenyan safari.
Best of Nairobi
The perfect 2-night stopover, Nairobi Tented Camp offers game drives and guided nature walks in addition to optional excursions to Nairobi’s top attractions. Your stopover includes a game drive and a visit to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. We also recommend highlights such as the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.
Into the Masai Mara
A road transfer takes you to Wilson Airport for your charter flight to the Masai Mara National Park. Your guide meets you on arrival and transfers you via a game drive to Nkorombo, Serian’s tented mobile camp. Nkorombo is set on a private riverside site along the banks of the Mara River. This is an authentic safari camp with an intimate five Meru-style tents decked out in traditional style with comfortable single cots, plush carpets and en suite bathrooms with flush toilets and bucket showers.
While your activities centre exclusively on game drives in the National Park, you once again have your own vehicle, guide and tracker, which means you determine the pace and extent of your expeditions. Set out early in the morning when the game is on the move and stop off for a picnic lunch under trees or head out in the afternoon heading slowly for a superb sundowner spot on the plains – your schedule is up to you.
Rhino, lion & leaping wildebeest
A salt lick next door to the camp regularly attracts an abundance of plains game. And where you find plentiful resident antelope, you find predators like lion and leopard. Birdlife is prolific with over 450 recorded species, 57 of which are magnificent birds of prey. The bird and game viewing is spectacular year-round but Nkorombo also offers front-row seats to the Great Migration’s river crossings.
Depending on the rains but generally occurring between June and November each year, thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate into the area. Between July and August, they cross the Mara River, which the camp overlooks. River crossings are an unforgettable spectacle – the herds may gather at the edge of a steep bank, hesitant, building the internal pressure to cross. Eventually, a few courageous individuals plunge into the water, often followed by a stampede that carries the whole herd across.
There are few other natural spectacles that allow you to witness such a primal fight for survival: the creatures struggle to survive the enormous, snapping jaws of crocodiles, the sweeping currents of the river and the broken limbs that accompany with panic and steep river banks. It is impossible to witness a river crossing and not be moved by what you see – to resonate with that deep instinctual urge within all mammals to intuitively fight for life.
Your private wilderness
A game drive carries you from Masai Mara National Reserve to the Mara North Conservancy and Ngare Serian, your home for the next three nights. Settle into your tented suite before sitting down to a welcome lunch. Refreshed and recharged, you have ready for an afternoon game drive – your first expedition into the magnificent wilderness you have come to explore.
Known as the Masai Mara’s most intimate camp, Ngare Serian is reached via a charming roped bridge or by boat, giving it a truly adventurous air, but the camp itself is stylish and contemporary. The elevated decking offers superb views and each of the four luxury en suite tents comes with a private guide and vehicle, a rare and very valuable advantage. Your suite is spacious with a 4-poster bed and full bathroom - including a flush toilet, twin basins, a sunken bathtub and a separate shower.
Exceptional expeditions
You are in a private conservancy, which offers distinct advantages, most especially the freedom to explore on foot. A guided nature walk is one of the most satisfying ways to discover the wilderness. Your senses become heightened, soaking up the sights, scents and sounds of Africa, opening you up to experience moments that create lifelong memories: the delicate dewy web of a spider, the story behind paw prints on a trail, the secret universe of a termite mound.
The game drives are also exceptional. Having your own vehicle, guide and tracker means exploring at your own pace and focusing on what you are most interested in – be it big game, bird life, photography or all of these! The scenery is classic African savannah – the rolling grassy plains of children’s stories beneath azure skies and populated with iconic wildlife. Make the most of your freedom: spend a day following where the tracks take you, stopping to picnic in shady spot, or spend the morning exploring and the afternoon indulging in a comfortable siesta in camp.
You have 1 500 acres to enjoy and plenty of ways to explore. In addition to guided walks and game drives, try your hand at fly-fishing on the Mara River or hop aboard a hot-air balloon for a bird’s eye view of dawn over the Masai Mara.
Homeward bound
After a delicious breakfast, bid the Mara farewell as you head back to the airstrip for your charter flight to Wilson Airport. As you fly over the vast plains on your way back to Nairobi, you remember the adventures of the previous week, the moments you will never forget, the scent of wild basil in the evening and the cry of the African fish eagle. You have stories to tell – what it felt like to witness thousands of wildebeest charge the Mara River, how enormous an elephant is up close, or how the setting sun over the Masai Mara took your breath away, every single day…

The Aberdare Range is just south of the equator and forms part of the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley. Its home to abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery.
The area is also famous for being the headquarters of Dedan Kimathi, leader of the 1950s Mau Mau uprising. We will enjoy a game drive after breakfast and then drive back to the country club for lunch and hope to spot the elusive golden cat or bongo - both rare sightings in the area. Some more common sightings are the lion, leopard, elephant, baboon, colobus monkey and a wide array of birds of prey.
Afterwards, you will pack a day pack for your overnight stay at "The Ark". The Ark is a unique tree lodge that overlooks a floodlit waterhole and saltlick which attracts a host of wildlife. Resembling and named after Noah's Ark, The Ark is designed with 'decks' from which numerous balconies and lounges provide superb vantage points for game viewing. A ground level bunker provides excellent photographic opportunities and takes you closer than you would believe possible to the animals.
The excitement of the Ark is at night, when the animals flock in large numbers to the watering hole.

A short drive takes us to Lake Nakuru National Park, the centrepiece of which is the lake itself.
Lake Nakuru is a soda lake which is home to massive numbers of flamingos - up to two million on occasion - and thousands of other birds. It has been described as the world's greatest ornithological spectacle and, at times, the lake is literally a sea of pink. In addition, the park itself also boasts substantial numbers of other species, including waterbuck, reedbuck and gazelle. Leopards are also to be found here, providing good chances for sightings (although there are no guarantees!). Perhaps we may also be fortunate enough to again encounter one of Africa's most endangered animals - the rhinoceros. There is quite a good chance of seeing white rhinos, whilst black rhinos may prove to be more elusive. After spending the day in the park, we return to our private lodge.

We head south-west to our next destination, the Masai Mara - arguably one of the finest game reserves in Africa (300kms, approx 8-9hrs). The area is known for its rolling green plains and riverine woodlands, and amongst the many species of game, we may be lucky to observe black-maned lion, leopard and cheetah. These predators find an abundant food supply in the massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle that roam the grasslands.
We will have an afternoon game drive on the way to our permanent tented camp.

Today we wake before dawn to start our morning game drive when the sun comes up, one of the times of the day when most animals tend to be more active. After what is hopefully an exciting morning's drive we return to camp for lunch and to relax during the heat of the day. We set off again in the afternoon and expect to return to camp around sunset. However, depending on wildlife movements, we may on occasion do a full day's game drive and in this instance we'll stop en-route for a picnic lunch.
An optional balloon ride over the Masai Mara at sunrise is an unforgettable experience. If you have pre-booked this activity (please see 'Important Notes') you will be picked up and driven to the launch site, receive a safety briefing from your pilot and help inflate the balloon. You then glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, providing amazing wildlife photography opportunities; sometimes ascending to get an overview of the enormity of the Masai Mara plains and the early morning movements of the teeming herds. Upon landing you'll be treated to a bush breakfast before being returned to your vehicle. Please note if you are taking a balloon ride over the Mara you will be taken to the launch place from our camp before dawn and returned to the group when you have finished your ride.
Please note that we offer this activity as a pre-booked service which will guarantee you a spot in a balloon. If you choose to wait and book this activity locally on the ground you may get a better price. However this is a popular activity and places are limited. It is at your own discretion if you wish to pre-book this service with us or try and book it locally while you are on your trip.

After breakfast, we return to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon, where our safari ends (240 km, approx 5-6 hrs).
If you are departing from Nairobi this evening, please do not book a flight to depart prior to 6pm. To reduce your travelling time back to Nairobi, you may wish to consider a flight from Masai Mara to Nairobi (additional cost). This gives you the chance to catch a late afternoon international flight out of Nairobi. Please note that the flight from Masai Mara arrives at Wilson Airport (Nairobi). International flights leave from Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). If staying on in Nairobi, you may require a transfer from Wilson Airport back to our Nairobi hotel. We are able to book the flight and also the transfer to our Nairobi hotel (additional costs involved).
